It is square eyes week -photographed 100's of sketches, thumbnails and art . . . scanner misbehaving. Crop, fiddle with hue, saturation, contrast blah blah blah. Some sketches were in a very poor condition but considering I found a few which are veritable antiques. Ok they're not but from up to 30 years ago I think I can get away with that bit, hehe. Miffed at how many I've lost over the years . . . sigh
This one is from some pre-production artwork for a film back in '83. Apart from a bit in the centre which is acrylic it is all fabric dyes.
This critter was called 'Um'. As I was doodling on a scrap of tracing paper someone asked what it was . . . back in 1978 in my student days. 5 years later he was syndicated in newspapers as a cartoon strip!
. . . and more up to date, a doodle from wednesday evening:

. . . if anyone wants to see some more of my art that's currently online:

Most of these were posted online more than a year ago. Soon there will be many, many more for perusal, much mirth or derision . . . hehe. Currently I am busy cataloguing 100's of sketches and finished artwork. Hopefully, I will be able to match up some sets of thumbnails, roughs and sketches for a few images.
This is a mammoth task due to 'losing' the master and back-ups -caffiene intake subsequently increased . . . now I must wean off very strong coffee (think hot water into jar with a spot of milk and shovel of sugar). Watch this space.
Now for an interlude

While cataloguing sketches I rendered this black and white image using the basics of Paint.net. A few cups of coffee later this was the result ... only this time I took a few screen shots. Being a noob to Blogger I am redoing this post, pah.
The process: take 1 graphics tablet, pen and computer: add a paint program and an image. Now have fun . . . well I did.
First layer holds the image, subsequent layers are used for base colours then each stage of rendering and detail. I find it's easier to only merge similar layers after completely happy with the result. Although 'undo' works on layering controls too . . . came in handy a couple of times -ok, several times.
The background colours for the sea were done quite simply -select primary and secondary colours, select clouds and fiddle with settings.
The clouds were rendered using gaussian blur -also good for smoke effects. I drew some streaks in different colours then added blur, adjusting the settings until I was happy with the result. Took all of 3 minutes, hehe!
Using layers is a very convenient way of working . . . but don't do as I did, again. As the settings such as opacity or overlay vary between layers, merging too early changes overall saturation, hue or contrast levels. Poor cats were shouted at when I did that . . .
